Chapter 7

Tyrell was waiting for me when I made it to the compound gate. Tiny had lost so much blood that she was starting to fall behind Spunk, but now that I had covering fire from above I was able to pick her up with my right hand and carry her the last hundred yards. I half expected for one of us to take an arrow before we made it inside the compound, but the rifle fire somehow managed to keep what was left of the enforcers busy long enough for us to make it to safety.

"What's happened to him?"

I handed Tiny to one of the guardsmen with Tyrell and then lowered Brennan down to the stretcher they'd brought. "Poison. He took an arrow to the side, but I got that out and got the bleeding under control. I think he's on the mend—or at least would be if I hadn't dragged him through a war zone—but there wasn't anything else I could do for him out there in the field."

Tyrell checked Brennan's pulse and then apparently decided that he wasn't in immediate risk of dying. "Okay, let's get him down to my room. I've got something that should get him back on his feet before the sun goes down."

A nearby guard handed me a strip of cloth as one of Tyrell's men set Tiny down so that he could grab his end of the stretcher. I picked her back up as I pressed the improvised bandage against her cut.

"Come on, Spunk."

"They aren't coming with us, Skye."

"Yes, they are. You don't have to let them into the secure area of the headquarters building, but surely there's someone back there who can watch them. I didn't bring them all this way just to have you throw them back outside the wall."

Tyrell had the grace to look embarrassed. "Nobody's talking about sending them back out into that. You can bring them along, but I'm holding you to your promise not to bring them into the lower levels."

I wasn't sure what I was expecting to see when we got to the headquarters building, but it definitely wasn't the sight that was waiting for me. Someone had taken massive bolts of fabric and strung them from the headquarters building out for dozens of yards in several different directions so that they were ten or twelve feet off of the ground.

It wasn't until I saw the people moving back and forth from the headquarters building to the bore that I realized what was going on. Tyrell was trying to defeat the Citizen-President's satellites.

As we got even closer I was able to see that the stream of people and equipment was coming directly out of the secure entrance.

"Why exactly are you worried about two little girls going down there when it looks like you've already got half of the compound traipsing around inside your precious secure area?"

Tyrell shrugged. "It's not half of the compound. It's a specially selected group that are as close to being perfectly vetted as I've been able to manage so far, but I take your point.
